Stop Press – Genius Accidentally Lost in Broadstone Warren

If you get the chance to visit Ashdown Forest in the near future, we would gratefully appreciate your helping 3rd West Wickham Scouts to locate and return Jobe’s self-declared Genius, which he unfortunately lost on camp at Broadstone Warren on Sunday 18th February.

After declaring said genius, he took command of the fearless group that wanted to explore the wilds of Ashdown Forest. In bright sunshine, Jobe elected himself leader on their Orienteering challenge without the safety of either a comfort blanket or adult, and then promptly led them straight off the map, and into the “Broadstone Triangle”. Luckily, Doug had anticipated this highly likely outcome, and magnificently strode off to bring the Genius patrol back to civilisation, whilst Geoff practised his accordion skills.

Please, if you do find Jobe’s genius, please let him have it back before he goes to the World Scout Jamboree next year. There is a reward, which should hopefully help towards his trip.

The rest of the weekend followed time-honoured tradition in having the Yoickling Herberts stopping everyone from getting enough sleep on Friday night except for Geoff, who skillfully avoided turning up until Saturday morning. Also on Saturday, whilst trying to fix the pedal carts, we learned about the two most important Laws of Mechanics:

  1. If it is supposed to move, but doesn’t, apply WD40
  2. If it moves when it shouldn’t, apply Duct Tape!

Scouts and Leaders alike enjoyed the highly satisfying “Thunk” of throwing an axe and embedding it successfully into the wooden target; an activity all agreed would go down equally well at HQ. Other activities over the weekend were Low Ropes (with commendable perseverance shown by Joe and Nathan), Air Rifles (cancelled on Saturday morning through a district-wide power failure), Pot-Holing (very wet & muddy), Tree-Gibboning (basically climbing and staying up trees).

Full marks to all those who tried to play a tune on the accordion; luckily this activity didn’t last very long, although we hope to be slightly more proficient for our June camp at Downe! Wide Games, Magic Tricks and Team Draughts also helped to keep everyone entertained.

Other than burning the spaghetti, the food was tasty and nourishing, and everyone helped with Preparation and Cleaning away.

Looking forward to the next camp already (and the return of Jobe’s Genius),

Jen, Doug Geoff & Steve
